White Coats for Black Lives is a medical-student run movement that began in 2014 as a response to the non-indictment of the officers responsible for the death of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Medical students across the country joined together as allies to the #BlackLivesMatter movement to speak out against injustice for Black communities from police brutality to the racism that pervades our education, criminal justice, and medical systems.
Since then, the White Coats for Black Lives movement has garnered much attention and gained momentum. The organization wishes to emphasize how physicians have incredible privilege in their profession, and how they have a responsibility to be on the forefront of social change. The organization publishes various posts on their social media pages sharing information about medical myths, facts about racial disparities in medicine, posts about institutionalized racism, sharing Black medical student experiences, information on starting a WCBL chapter, and much more.
